There's a bunch of science behind it but the short story is that Ion Plating is lighter, 8x more durable and more eco-friendly than regular plating. It is particularly suited to stainless steel and creates a far more hypoallergenic finish than stainless steel alone. It is a more expensive process but your earring finish will last much longer. I have a pair of Ion Plated leverbacks that are 25 years old!
NOTE: A bit more chemistry. Black is electrophoretic plated which markedly reduces the rubbing or fading of the color which can be a problem in black jewelry.
